Page 19:
No sooner had he gazed upon the photo than his love rebuked him. He had a wife. He had a daughter. They needed him. Even if they had given up all hope, he could not. It wasn’t right.
He let time slip from him as he stared at her before taking a deep breath. With vision in only one eye, he gazed at her face, and felt shame.
“Forgive me,” he said with a voice of gravel, “for giving up. I’ll come back to you.”
Page 20:
Slowly he rose to his feet and the room swirled round about him. He held out a hand, touching the wall for support. Pain shot into his arm, but his hand remained.
Footsteps came down the corridor.
