I read a great article from the creativeCOW magazine recently about film preservation and restoration. I think the author, Ken Weissman – Supervisor of the Film Preservation Laboratory at the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation, has the right idea in this. Most people would say to go straight to digital these days, but the simplicity of film can make it truly last forever. I think that there could definitely be a digital copy that people could access online, and under some kind of creative commons or open source copyright much like the Gutenberg project, for a lot of this stuff, though. Regardless, I like that someone is preserving this stuff and I think the United States Library of Congress is much like the great Library of Alexandria of old. Here are a few pull quotes from the article, which I highly recommend that you read in full here.
“These paper prints exist because of a vaguery in the copyright law at the time that motion pictures were invented. Read the rest of this entry »

The newest tutorial on the Refine Edge function for Photoshop CS3 is now available.
The refine edge function is the best way to get the best selection you want. Use it especially in conjunction with the magic wand and quick selection tools.
If you missed it, don’t forget to watch the other tutorials available here.
I went with a bit wider of a video format this time so that I didn’t have any wasted space when I post it on YouTube. Not sure if this is a great way to go, since the videos are hosted on here, but I didn’t want to make two different versions either. Let me know what you think. Are they too short, or do you prefer the widescreen format? If I happened to miss anything, let me know in the comments below. Don’t forget to subscribe by clicking the link to the left for any updates, new tutorials, and more.

in a bargain bin.

I liked the artwork from the start and read maybe a page or two at the store and decided it was definitely worth a purchase. I got it home and read it to my son. For any of those that have a two year old, you can understand that it isn’t easy to keep one still long enough to finish a book, even one so short, but he was attentive the entire time. As for me, I loved not only the illustration style but the writing as well. I highly recommend picking it up whether you have kids or not.
I don’t have it yet, but Patrick has a second children’s book Read the rest of this entry »

Here is a new illustration project that I recently did for my own family. I am giving the chance to win a similar customized illustration to one lucky reader. See the bottom of this post for details.

This idea came to me out of my love of typography and particularly illustrated style. It started from sketching the name of my son before he was born. I think we were still in the process of deciding on a name, just playing around passing time. I had come up with something that I liked and thought, Read the rest of this entry »
