#SooC52 Week 23 – Hands

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

I’m almost caught up now! This week’s theme was chosen by Pete, who never seems to have an idea what to do when he chooses a theme! His photo for this week is pretty awesome though, so go check it out.

Still trying to get caught up quickly, so I did this one fairly off the cuff. This is my little baby (9 month old now!) trying to grab my camera as I tickled her with the lens and then backed away.

This shot is pretty blurry to be honest. It wasn’t at all effective to try to focus on her hands as I backed away (which was the only way I could get her to put her hands up like this in the first place) as it wouldn’t catch the right thing and then she would move instantly. This was definitely a touch and go operation. So, what I did was set my lens to manual focus, set it to as close as it could get, then backed away and snapped it when it looked like her hands were in focus. This is exceptionally hard when you have such a tiny depth of field of aperture 1.8! I could have used a narrower aperture to increase the depth, but since the subject is hands, I wanted only that in focus and her face out of focus. I think I mostly accomplished this. I also could have used more light. I just had her on the floor with the ceiling light on and some fading window light camera left. That at least would have increased my shutter speed, to reduce potential movement blur from both me moving the camera, as well as her hands moving.

I still think it’s kind of a cute shot, personally. Her bokeh smile in the background and the position of her hands is what makes it for me. And I have to remember not every winning shot is crystal clear. But I’ll still try harder next time!

I just realized I’m going to get crap from the rest of the guys because I have yet another red image! haha

#SooC52 Week 22 – Food

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

This week’s theme was chosen by Eje. Though it’s odd because we know that short little rail thin bean stalk never actually eats food. Pretty sure he’s a breatharian.

Anyway, I’m going to try make this quick. I thought about doing a macro shot of some food, as most typically in food shots you see beautifully lit, natural window, side light, artfully arranged, instagram filters, or any other thing to make the food much more appetizing. I don’t necessarily want to take the opposite approach and make the food look gross, but I do want to focus (no pun intended) on the minute details of the food I eat that you don’t normally see. So, out came the 300mm macro.

This image is fairly dark and has a little motion blur as I handheld (in the morning no less!), which I tell you, isn’t easy with a long lens at 1/50! My other shots were worse, believe me.

I do plan on following up with this idea more in depth. I am going to buy some extension macro tubes and try out a few different lenses to see what kind of results I get. I am likely to write up a blog post on that when I get the tubes. It should be an interesting experiment. Keep subscribed (hit the button on the left!) so you can find out more about that in the future.

I’d be interested in hearing any comments on this. Any particular food you’d like to see done on macro? Any suggestions of anything else? Sound off below.

Check out Pete’s work here, he’s the only other participating anymore. Hopefully the other guy’s will find time and get back to it!

#SooC52 Week 21 – Remember

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

I am way behind in this. I believe approximately four weeks since the last post! So here I am trying to catch up. Everyone is busy and lately it’s only Pete and I that have been at least trying to participate. Not sure what happened to everyone else, but maybe they will catch up later as well.

So, this week (the 21st week) was chosen by Loc and was a fairly conceptual theme – Remember. This one caught me up and I wanted to do something pretty cool, but as life goes (and especially lately) things got busy and I either couldn’t nail down a concept or didn’t have the opportunity to follow up on any of my ideas. So, I came up with this.

Remembering

It’s pretty lame, to be honest, and kind of an admitted white towel (surrender). I just want to get past this subject and move on to the next ones and be caught up so I can focus again. So, this is basically just about how people look at photo albums in the digital age. I opened up a folder with a bunch of family photos of kids and others and more or less took a screen grab, but with my camera. I thought about doing variations with a physical scrap/photo book next to the screen or something similar, but decided on just this. Using the lens that I did, the edges are a little bowed, which was surprising since I used a 50mm on a full frame camera (Canon 5D MII), which I thought was supposed to be zero fisheye. Guess I was wrong there.

In this size of an image you really can’t see any of the photos on the screen, but in the full size version (a 24″ monitor with the program at full screen) you can see some, but not many details. This is somewhat reminiscent (no pun intended) of memories, as they are generally fairly vague. Maybe not this vague, and it certainly depends on the person and the memory, but for me this is somewhat accurate. Many memories, all together, but none of them sparklingly clear. That’s unfortunate. I really wish I did have a better memory, and I’m sure it will only get worse from now on as I age. I am 30 now, but my memory has never been the best. My cousin on the other hand, superb memory. He always reminds me of things that happened in our childhoods.

Anyway, more images to come in the next couple days as I pump out these SooC images!

For now, I’m just going to post Pete’s blog here, as he is the only one caught up!
