We are really getting quite along in this Straight Out of Camera 52 week challenge! This week’s topic was chosen by the illustrator among us, Loc. He lives in Atlanta, Georga and said that his car was covered in flowers, so it only seemed appropriate. I told him that I still had winter here, with at least a foot of snow on the ground in my back yard. We are melting quite a bit, but we have a long way to go yet before any sort of natural blooming occurs. So, I had a couple choices, shoot a fake flower or buy a flower. I thought my wife would appreciate a rose, her favorite flower, so I picked up one with some baby breath, you know, the typical little arrangement. She was surprised, but I did have to tell her I had an ulterior motive.
Anyway, my first plan is what I did for my first shot. The color isn’t quite accurate as the rose is more of a blush, or lighter pink, color. The lens I had for this isn’t the sharpest, but it’s the only macro lens I have. I really would have preferred getting in a lot closer, but this was the closest I could get with that one. Not very macro really. I’ve thought about picking up some extension tubes, but haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe I will now that summer is coming.
Canon 5D Mark II with 70-300mm @ 300mm (same for all images), ISO 800, f/22, 1/4. lit by ceiling pendant light.
I moved down some and liked how this second shot was framed, with some green in the background.
same settings as shot above
Went to the side of it and the window was dark which made a nice black backdrop and I liked how the light fell on the top while still seeing detail underneath.
f/18, other settings same.
I could mention, for my JPG in camera settings I have
Color Tone 0
Not sure if that is why the color isn’t quite spot on. It seemed that when I exposed lighter it just got blown out instead of looking more like the pink that the flower really is. Either way, hope you enjoyed the photos!
