No, that isn’t a misspelling in the post title. It is the name of this particular photo subject, a detail shot of an old fire extinguisher. This is Friday Photo #26. I have been working through (slowly!) my photo series from the Wilson Bros building. Besides the texture on this extinguisher, I was particularly drawn to the old design. I’ll just leave it at that for today, and enjoy:

This is an explanation of how I work for design. It can generally be applied to any sort of design, but I’ll talk more specifically about designing logos, since that is a specialty of mine. So after the project has been discussed and the agreement is signed and the down payment has been paid, this is what I do.
Brainstorming and Mind-Mapping
The first step is just generating ideas. I start with the very basic, generally the name of the business or what it does, and think of absolutely everything that has to do with that industry. This stage is very fast moving, with lots of ideas in a short amount of time.
A mind-map is like a diagram of connecting bubbles with words or phrases inside. Here is an example of a previous job for a computer repair company:

Now available exclusively to my clients are the following Christmas card designs. I designed these myself, so they are unavailable anywhere else. Most designs are available in both vertical and horizontal layout.
Clients can choose which photo(s) they want displayed out of their photo set and what words they want written. There is no minimum order and you can get any combination of cards if you want more than one variety (unlike most sites that require ordering in quantities of 20).
It is a little late now for photography services before Christmas, but these cards will also be available next year as well as more I design for 2011. Hope to hear from you soon!

I recently put a whole slew of stuff in the various portfolio sections. Some of it has been shown on the blog before, but I’ll repost them here anyway.
These are available to order as a fine art print:

My father will soon be taking his Master Electricians license and thus be opening a new small business. To be prepared for that, I created a logo and business card for him. This post will cover the logo design process and my thoughts throughout the project.
To start with, he was going to need a business name. One obvious choice would be to use his name as many single person contractors do. I started with his full name, but soon decided upon just his first name as this gives a more familiar and approachable appearance. A single name is also easier to remember and since his name is Stanley it can give a subtle subconscious reminder of the tool brand as well. Added to this is his title Master Electrician, which puts forth confidence in his ability and affirms the quality of service.
