This week [actually a couple weeks ago, I’ve been busy!] was a theme chosen by me! I chose broke, without any particular image in mind. Or at least I don’t recall having something in mind when I chose it. I probably did, but I actually chose the theme way before the week even came and actually forgot what theme I had chosen. Like most of the themes I choose, I had a double meaning applied to it. So people could either use the word to mean an item that is broken, or the state of being penniless.
Anyway, at some point I actually did come up with an idea, that just kind of popped into my head randomly. A broken nose is a pretty nasty break. Unpleasant/painful, overly gruesome visually for how much your nose bleeds, and a good excuse for me to play with makeup or fake blood. The nose isn’t quite as puffed up as it probably would be if it were actually broken, but I stuffed nearly an entire cotton ball up each nostril and it really burned! I think it made my eyes water with the sensitive nerves inside my nose. The cotton was clean, and I added some commercial theater blood to the outside to look as though it had soaked up fully and was still draining out. I flicked some more blood at myself with an old toothbrush to get a little spatter, and then let it run down. I inadvertently got some of the blood on the white shower curtain behind me, oops! Added a couple butterfly bandages for effect, wet my hair with gel and mussed it up, and then spattered some water on myself to appear as sweat. I think most of that actually dried off of me by the time I shot the photo though. I’d like to note I wasn’t going for a beat up look, just a busted nose, so I didn’t try for black eyes or scrapes or anything like that.
For photo set-up, I have a black backdrop hanging behind, and a YN560 III straight to either side of me set at 1/16, if I recall. They were also zoomed in to 105mm.

I’ve never actually broken my nose, and I hope to keep it that way. Have you ever broken your nose? Have a cool story about it? Share in the comments below.
