#SooC52 Week 19 – Cloud

Chris Lane / photography / / 3 Comments

This week’s theme was chosen by John. Unfortunately, I chose to interpret the smoke/fog by shooting a cloud picture. So, I had to come up with a different way of doing it than I did last time. So I went back to an idea I had for the mirror photo, where I could shoot some clouds mirrored in a puddle. It was very wet in the yard and driveway still, and a nice cloudy day, but I wasn’t overly satisfied with how the photo turned out. Then I shot some cool sunset clouds, close in on them and thought I could use that. Then I was working on my lawnmower and the garage was getting filled with exhaust smoke. The big door was open, but it was kind of pooling up in the roof rafters. My garage is a pretty crappy old shed and the roof has holes in it. When I looked up I saw the light shining through the smoke making a pretty neat image. So I decided, since I shot clouds for smoke, I’ll shoot smoke for clouds. So here is that image:

I probably should have bumped up my ISO, so I could increase the aperture number to extend the Depth of Field a bit, but I think still an interesting image. Thoughts?

#SooC52 Week 16 – Smoke/Fog

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

This week, which is actually a couple weeks behind now at this point, was chosen by Eje. He chose Smoke or Fog. I took this topic a little bit different. I was thinking of doing something with incense, but that was done to death by the other guys. Then I thought I’d do something with atmospheric perspective, where everything gets hazy and bluer in the distance, due to all the air and atmosphere between your eyes and the distant object. You can read more about atmospheric perspective here. It is a pretty basic tenet of art training, particularly in painting, since when you paint you have to do it consciously and when you take photographs, it just happens anyway.

I never got around to taking that shot, but there were some pretty brilliant clouds one day while I was working outside, so I decided that’s the next best thing. And what is a cloud but fog in the sky in a concentrated area? So I shot a number of them, but here is what I will show today:

I also edited this shot to have more contrast, sharpened a bit with a High pass filter, and altered the color somewhat. I also removed some spots that must be dirt on my lens, or possibly the sensor. So here, is my post processed version.

There you have it. Now I better get to work and catch up!

Into the fog

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

I have posted a few times how much I love the fog, especially in photographs. It lends itself to some mystery and wipes away all the visual noise. A short time ago it was ridiculously foggy out and I got some pretty nice shots, I think.

Foggy field in the fall

Chris Lane / photography / / 0 Comments

Today’s Friday photo is from a morning on the way to work last fall. It was particularly foggy yet sunny at the same time, which makes a lovely combination. By the time I took this photo, the fog was starting to only be left in the low areas and under and around trees. It looks like clouds laying on the ground.

Today’s photo is one from September of 2009. It was a foggy morning and I shot this directly into the rising sun. If you would like to order a fine art print, use my order form here.
