Dramatic skies over pastoral scenes

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

A note, these images look like digitally post-processed HDR, and though they are definitely digital, I only used methods that I could easily replicate in the traditional darkroom for the exposure. I primarily used the same digital negative at developed at different exposures and laid them over top of each other, showing only the part that I want. I used further burning and dodging techniques. I did do some extra color correction in Photoshop, though surprisingly little. All of these photos are quite dramatic, but these are the kinds of moments that are far in between and I always run to grab my camera to hope to capture it faithfully. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and if you are interested in a print of any of these, head over to my print order page.

Sunset Over River

Chris Lane / photography, process / / 2 Comments

This is a bonus photo for this week, as I won’t be working on a long form blog post.
This is an HDR shot from my backyard. My wife and I had just gone for a canoe ride on the river here and I loved the sunset, so when we were finished I grabbed my camera, tripod, and set out to try an HDR. I took 11 exposures ranging from 1/400 to 1/8000 at f/3.5 and ISO 400.

Shot with Canon 40D with EF28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM set at 28mm. I used the auto-bracketing feature multiple times. HDR put together in Photomatix with some minor editing in Photoshop.

It’s Electric in HDR

Chris Lane / photography, Retouched / / 0 Comments

Once again, a photo up on Friday for my 52 week project. This one comes in as number 13.
This photo is from the building series that this one here produced. I am really happy with this image. Inspired by all of the HDR images I have been looking at lately, such as in this interview when I was looking through my RAW images from this building, I saw I bracketed this photo with two images. So I dropped them in to Photomatix and worked with it for a while with some final touches in Photoshop.

Photo details: ISO500, f/5.0 brackets of 1/5 and 1/10.

Let me know what you think of this HDR photo in the comments below. Subscribe in the left hand sidebar to see more progress from this series, and I definitely plan on doing more HDR photographs in the future. If you are interested in buying a print, write it up here.

Featured Artist – Chris Maskell

One of my favorite photography subjects is urban exploration and abandoned building photography. Unfortunately, I am unable to do much, if any, urban exploration (urbex) because I live in such a rural location. I do occasionally get to some abandoned houses, but time only permits so much. So I approached photographer Chris Maskell, who is based in London to ask him a few questions and feature his great HDR work.
