Dramatic skies over pastoral scenes

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

A note, these images look like digitally post-processed HDR, and though they are definitely digital, I only used methods that I could easily replicate in the traditional darkroom for the exposure. I primarily used the same digital negative at developed at different exposures and laid them over top of each other, showing only the part that I want. I used further burning and dodging techniques. I did do some extra color correction in Photoshop, though surprisingly little. All of these photos are quite dramatic, but these are the kinds of moments that are far in between and I always run to grab my camera to hope to capture it faithfully. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and if you are interested in a print of any of these, head over to my print order page.

15 seconds in the evening; a Timelapse

Chris Lane / photography, vidcast / / 0 Comments

Here I have a (very) short time-lapse video. This is taken in a few locations in my backyard in a single evening. I am still working through ways of doing time-lapse video, so I learned a few things. For one, I need to learn patience on my shots. When I was shooting these, often I thought, “oooh, but this over here would make a great shot!” but as you can see in this video, most of the clips are just too short. I didn’t really have much of an end in mind and since the clips are so short, it made the ending very abrupt. I could have faded it out along with fading the music, but eh, this is more of an experiment than anything.
I would love to hear any comments you may have on the video, or the music, or anything.

Maternity Photo in the Sunset

Chris Lane / photography / / 2 Comments

Here is photo #15 in my 52 week project. It is one from my recent maternity photo shoot with my wife for our third child. I wanted a very warm and welcoming look outside and what better way than to shoot into the warmest object around – the sun. This photo is basically straight out of the camera with some very minor edits in Camera RAW.

Shot at ISO 200, 1/250 at f/2.2 at 50mm.

Sunset Over River

Chris Lane / photography, process / / 2 Comments

This is a bonus photo for this week, as I won’t be working on a long form blog post.
This is an HDR shot from my backyard. My wife and I had just gone for a canoe ride on the river here and I loved the sunset, so when we were finished I grabbed my camera, tripod, and set out to try an HDR. I took 11 exposures ranging from 1/400 to 1/8000 at f/3.5 and ISO 400.

Shot with Canon 40D with EF28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM set at 28mm. I used the auto-bracketing feature multiple times. HDR put together in Photomatix with some minor editing in Photoshop.
